Campaign to meet climate and nature commitments takes a step forward

The landmark Climate and Nature Bill which would put the UK back on course to meet its international climate and nature targets has taken an important step forward in Westminster. Andrew George MP, a leading supporter of the Bill, says the decision of a fellow Liberal Democrat (Dr Roz Savage MP) who came high in the MPs’ ballot for private members’ legislation has massively improved its chance of success.
If passed, the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill would update the UK’s climate and environmental legislation in line with commitments that the Government has already made internationally — first, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global heating to 1.5°C — and second, to reverse nature loss by 2030.
By doing so, it would put the UK back on track to meet its climate and nature commitments and has already attracted the support of major figures such as Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and former net zero tsar Chris Skidmore who said the government should enact this “Climate Change Act 2”.
Andrew George has been a leading proponent of the Bill, and persuaded Cornwall Council to back the proposed legislation at his second attempt last year. He’s delighted Roz Savage has taken it on. Roz holds four World Records for ocean rowing, including first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian.
Andrew said: “It’s very good news that Roz has chosen to back our Bill. It represents our best chance of protecting our natural environment and building the industries of the future.
“The Conservatives failed to live up to our international obligations. This bill gives the UK a chance of getting things back on track and to offer future generations the security that they deserve.
“I hope that the government works with us to get this landmark legislation passed.”
