Andrew George says PM should “stand for peace” not “stand with Israel”
The Government must stand up for peace in the Middle East and work towards a two-state solution to the current conflict, says St Ives Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George.
Andrew said: “Our Prime Minister and the US President say they “stand with Israel”. I stand with peace.
“Of course I stand with the Israeli people – but I also stand with the Lebanese people, the Palestinians, those still being so mercilessly bombarded in Gaza, in Beirut and throughout Lebanon, and in the West Bank.
“I also applaud the use of our military to protect innocent life in Israel. But if we can do that to protect innocent people in Israel we should offer and provide the same to protect the thousands of innocent people who have been and are being killed, maimed and displaced in Gaza, in Beirut and elsewhere by Israel.”
Andrew added: “I fear our Prime Minister has allowed himself to stand with the far-right Netanyahu regime, rather than just the Israeli people. We should stand for peace and for an even-handed approach to conflict resolution, a ceasefire and restoration of peace talks, and promotion of the two-state solution.”
