No need for energy bill hike if we reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels

Following today’s announcement from Ofgem of a 13% increase in the energy price cap from July — adding £221 a year to typical household costs — West Cornwall MP Andrew George said these energy bill shocks can be averted if we reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels. He fears that rising energy bills will more households into financial strain.

Andrew said:

“The Government’s promise of temporary VAT cuts on family attractions and children’s meals, though of course welcome, won’t do much to lessen the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.

“A decade of underinvestment in renewables and home insulation has left the UK exposed to volatile global markets – from Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, to the Trumpflation caused by the attack on Iran – driving up bills for everyone.”

Setting out an alternative, Andrew called for urgent action to cut bills permanently. He said:

“What’s needed is sustained investment in renewables and home insulation to cut bills, reduce emissions, and create jobs; a decisive reduction in reliance on imported fossil fuels by scaling up clean, homegrown energy and strengthening energy security; a shift in policy costs away from households by funding them through windfall taxes on banks and oil companies; and a faster net zero transition, with a target of around 95% clean electricity by 2030 to boost energy independence and position the UK as a leader in clean technology.

“Clean energy isn’t just about cutting emissions — it also means lower bills, stronger energy security, and more green jobs.

“It’s about building a system that works for people — stable, sustainable, and fit for the future.”
