A good month for the Isles of Scilly. But much more work to do

A series of ministerial meetings and debates have helped ease some of the pressure and offered a glimmer of hope and light:

  1. Local Government Minister, Alison McGovern MP, promised – in a recent meeting in her office in the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government – to look again at the so-called “bespoke” Financial Settlement to the Isles of Scilly which the Council predicted would bankrupt the islands in just a few years;
  2. Transport Ministers have agreed to explore new models for the provision of affordable transport both to and between the islands; following a Commons debate, which was followed by a ministerial meeting with Council officials;
  3. Education Minister, Baroness Jacqui Smith, agreed to look again at the Government’s support for post-16-year-old students who need to study on the mainland; accepting that the ‘package’ of support must give them an equivalence to their mainland counterparts, including for safeguarding and pastoral support.
