Andrew George MP responds to Amos review on maternity and neonatal care

In a question in the House of Commons yesterday (30th June), West Cornwall & Scilly MP, Andrew George called on Health Minister, James Murray MP to introduce mandatory safe staffing levels for maternity care. His question followed the findings of the recent Amos review into maternity and neonatal care in England. In a statement on social media, Andrew George said:

Reports of avoidable baby and mother death; and of failure, coverup, and racism in maternity services have caused extreme shock, and understandable demands for action.

“I’ve been amazed at the strength of those families who have been prepared to put themselves through unbearably painful and distressing retelling of their traumas, and admire their unwavering determination to pursue truth and justice.

“That’s why I asked the Health Secretary to support our clearly overstretched front Line NHS staff. Far too many of the appalling examples of trauma and service failure have at their root insufficient consultant obstetricians, midwives and other frontline health professionals.

“We must remain determined to learn lessons and to work for the best.”
