West Cornwall post offices – Minister agrees to meet George
In the House of Commons yesterday, Post Office Minister, Gareth Thomas MP, agreed to meet with West Cornwall Liberal Democrat MP, Andrew George, to discuss the challenges of re-establishing Post Office branches in locations in his constituency. Commenting, Mr George said:
“A dozen post offices closed across the constituency in the last 10 years, including Carbis Bay, Heamoor, Marazion, Gulval and Leedstown. The two towns of Porthleven and Newlyn have been earmarked by the Post Office to be re-opened if any local business is interested in taking on the franchise. But the remuneration levels are so low, that it would be like asking someone to work for less than the minimum wage.
“I’m pleased the Minister has agreed to meet. Though I’m keen to raise the challenges of re-establishing Newlyn and Porthleven with him, I’m also keen to raise others, if local community representatives wish to get in contact.”
