We’re halting the decline; rebuilding will take longer.

Andrew George reflects after First Year Back in Parliament

On the eve of the first anniversary of his successful re-election back as MP for West Cornwall & Scilly (St Ives constituency), Andrew George said “We’re making good progress; halted and now reversing decline. But there’s much more to do.

“Standing up to bullies, combatting inequality, and fighting for justice for the most marginalised is never easy. Especially after a decade when the politics of this country went in the opposite direction,” said Andrew. “My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have worked to bring decency and accountability back into politics—both locally and nationally.

“Though we can point to progress made on housing justice, restoring our NHS, cleaning up the sewage scandal, promoting nature recovery, protecting the most vulnerable, and fighting for human rights both here and around the world, in truth we’ve only just managed to halt the decline and started to make measurable progress.

“From resurrecting the Women & Children’s Hospital in Truro, to successfully campaigning to secure more national funds for social homes; backing plans to ensure water company bosses are held to account to forcing the government into important though still too-small toughening of its dealings with the far-right Israeli government, across the board we’re making progress. We’re also successfully campaigning to force the government to reverse unwise policies like the cuts in disability benefits and winter fuel allowance by creating a climate in which many more Labour backbenchers feel emboldened to stand up to their whips.

“It’s been a year of good progress. But there’s much more to do”.
