Trade Secretary to meet MPs working on Cornish Industrial Strategy
Trade Secretary Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds MP has agreed to meet all six Cornish MPs to explore options for a “bespoke Cornish Industrial Strategy”. This followed exchanges in the Commons today between local MPs Andrew George and Perran Moon. Mr George requested a meeting and the Trade Secretary’s support for a bespoke approach “to take the opportunities and overcome the challenges that Cornwall faces”.
“I welcome the Trade secretary’s encouraging response to our questions today. Cornwall was dealt a severe blow by the last Conservative government when EU economic development aid was withdrawn. Nothing equivalent was ever put in its place.
“Cornwall has major opportunities ahead of it in renewable energy, critical minerals, geothermal power, the space sector and satellite communications. But we need a public and private investment strategy to drive these growth sectors. Otherwise, we will be left behind.
“All six Cornish MPs are working together well, across the chamber and putting Cornwall above party politics. We’ll set a date for the Ministers meeting and visit as soon as possible. Work with the local business community and Council will form the foundation for a positive agenda for the Cornwall region – ‘the Cornish Celtic Tiger’ as Perran describes us – and good opportunities for the government to back a region which wants and needs growth.”
