Comment on Welfare Bill Vote
Speaking following his ‘no’ vote on the Government’s Universal Credit and Personal Independent Payment Bill (commonly known as the ‘Welfare Bill’) last week, West Cornwall MP, Andrew George commented:
“If the government viewed this as ‘investment’ in people rather than ‘welfare’ for dependents, they’d help more people, create more employment and cut the bill to the public purse. If the Labour Government’s policy is, like the Conservatives, to bully and threaten people rather than help them into work, they will fail, and impoverish and cause early death to those affected by the policy.
“The government has got this all wrong. Sometimes you have to invest to save. Helping the sick and disabled is an investment challenge not one that can be successfully delivered through sanctions.”
