“Inadequate”. One-word assessment of chief care inspectorate.
The Care Quality Commission received its own inspection report this week and was rated “inadequate”.
The troubled Inspectorate was before the Commons Health Committee this week – with the newly appointed chief executive, Sir Julian Hartley, and the outgoing chair Ian Dilks.
The troubled organisation has lost staff, mishandled its commissioning of new technology, and lost the confidence of the health and care sector it oversees.
Health Committee member, Andrew George MP, who issued his judgement during the committee grilling, said afterwards, “The chief executive said he prefers to keep the one-word inspection judgements, and I felt it was only fair that he experienced himself how it feels to be on the receiving end of such a judgement. Although I’m sure the committee feels a little more confident that the CQC can work to restore the respect of the health and care sector, there is clearly an enormous amount of work to be done and I know the Committee will want to come back to review progress.“
