Andrew George MP votes for compensation for 6,820 WASPI women in St Ives
In a vote in Parliament this week, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, Andrew George voted for a bill paving the way to give compensation to WASPI women. It follows an independent report that found they had suffered an injustice due to a failure to properly inform them of pension age changes.
Andrew George said that they were “proud” to vote for the bill that would have righted a “gross injustice”.
St Ives MP went on to express their “immense disappointment” that Conservative and Labour MPs had failed to back it and promised to “keep fighting” until the 6,820 WASPI women in the local area got the compensation and justice they were owed.
Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, Andrew George said:
“This would have been a difficult decision for any government, but it brings shame on both Labour and the Conservatives. The Conservatives deliberately slowed the process to leave the controversy for the next government, and Labour has made the wrong call.”
“The new government didn’t need to turn its back on millions of pension-age women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s recommendations, especially after they took away winter fuel payments from so many.”
“The Conservatives left our economy in a shambles, but asking wronged pensioners to pay the price of their mismanagement is simply unfair.”
“For years, my Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have pushed the government to fairly compensate WASPI women in line with the Ombudsman’s recommendations. The government’s heartless decision cannot be allowed to stand, and we will be pressing ministers to give those affected the fair treatment they deserve.”
