The UK Government should no longer ‘stand with’ the far-right Netanyahu regime, says George

Andrew George MP speaking to the Commons in the debate on Gaza & Lebanon on 15th October 2024
In the Commons yesterday, Andrew George – Liberal Democrat MP for the West Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives – called for equivalence in how the government defends innocent civilians caught up in violence in the Middle East.
In over a year of fighting since the appalling Hamas attack on Israel on 7th October 2023, thousands of innocent civilians in Gaza, Lebanon and also in Israel have tragically been killed. As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah expands, and in the wake of an intensification of violence in northern Gaza, the deaths of more innocent citizens is as unwelcome as it is inevitable.
Andrew George has condemned the UK government for not doing enough, as Israel – a country he described as one of the most sophisticated military powers on the planet – slaughters innocent people.
Andrew said: “The government’s position must change. I support the use of the UK’s military when it was deployed to help intercept missiles, and protecting innocent Israeli civilians when they were under attack. But there has been no equivalence for innocent civilians in Gaza and Lebanon when they are under Israeli attack. Instead we supply their weapons. This must stop.”
