George ‘disappointed’ by reports on EU-UK fishing deal

Following reports that EU fishing vessels will continue to have access to (the 6-12 nm zone of) UK waters until 2038 – a 12 year extension of the current deal – West Cornwall MP Andrew George, who lobbied Ministers on the deal (attached), commented:

“This is very disappointing. The fishing industry was let down by the Conservatives, who failed to ensure exclusive rights for UK vessels within the 12 mile zone, as they promised they would. Now the Labour government have compounded this by failing to take the opportunity to take back control of our fishing waters to the 12-mile limit.

“The fishing industry was always seen as “expendable” by previous Conservatives*. It’s clear now the Labour government see it in the same way.”
