Cornwall deserves a ‘Bespoke’ Devolution Deal – George

Posted on: 17th August 2026

Andrew George MP said Cornwall deserves to secure a higher-level, ‘bespoke’ devolution settlement, as Cornwall’s six MPs, and Cornwall Council, prepare the case they will make at the invitation of Prime Minister Burnham to Downing Street North next month.

In welcoming the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Cornwall, Mr George backed the principles behind the Government’s ambition to devolve, but added that Cornwall should secure powers beyond the Foundation Strategic Authority status already offered, reflecting Cornwall’s unique status. Mr George described the opportunity to meet the PM as “the best opportunity in a generation to determine how Cornwall is governed”.

Though he questioned the appropriateness of the Government’s desired directly elected mayor for Cornwall, arguing that Cornwall’s “One & All” motto, and it’s distinct and dispersed communities (without a dominant ‘centre’), mean it would be poorly governed by an overly powerful individual who failed to collaborate or consult.

Mr George’s statements (see links below) explain that he hoped to soon also discuss with the Prime Minister several major challenges facing Cornwall, including the opportunities for the Government if the PM supports his Private Members’ Bill later this autumn; a Bill designed to assist those in greatest housing need.
