Powerful Commons committee will focus on West Cornwall NHS

On Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd April, MPs of the influential House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee will visit local NHS and community healthcare services around Cornwall.

During their visit, committee-members will be shown first-hand many of the sites used to deliver neighbourhood health services locally, as part of the committee’s inquiry into ‘Delivering The Neighbourhood Health Service: Estates’.

Local MP, Andrew George – a member of the committee – is looking forward to highlighting the local need for greater Government investment in the NHS, and other local issues to the visitors as they tour the Duchy. He said:

“I am delighted to have persuaded the committee to visit the constituency. Our NHS is at a critically important moment. If the Government’s plan to shift resources from hospital to community is to be successful, we need to see some front loading of resources, safe staffing, better integration with all partners (GPs, voluntary sector, pharmacies, district nurses, nursing and residential homes, et cetera).

“We will visit some excellent services provided by outstanding frontline staff throughout the constituency. I look forward to showing my colleagues around and then reporting back to Government.”

The Select Committee’s investigation will inform national Government policy, as Ministers plan their vision for a ‘neighbourhood’ health service as part of the NHS’s 10 year plan. An important element of that plan is to move the delivery of services from hospitals to the community.
