Andrew George presses Minister over spray foam scam targeting vulnerable homeowners
Andrew George MP has taken Cornwall’s concerns about rogue traders and spray foam insulation directly to Government ministers, hosting a meeting with Energy Minister, Martin McCluskey MP in Westminster.
Joining remotely were Cornwall Councillor Mike Thomas and Gary Webster from Cornwall Trading Standards, who discussed the growing problem of rogue traders targeting elderly and vulnerable homeowners.
The meeting follows a campaign led by Cllr Thomas, supported by Andrew in Westminster, exposing companies that use cold-calling and doorstep sales tactics to pressure people into installing spray foam insulation, often falsely claiming the work is part of a Government-backed scheme.
In many cases, homeowners are charged thousands of pounds for work which can create damp and condensation problems, particularly in older properties, and may even make homes difficult to sell.
Andrew George MP said:
“I want to congratulate Mike Thomas for his outstanding work in exposing these practices and standing up for those who have been exploited.
“Too many vulnerable people have been targeted by rogue traders using misleading claims and high-pressure sales techniques. In many cases, homeowners have been left facing costly remedial work, and some have lost substantial sums of money as a result.”
Many affected householders then face further expense removing the spray foam, often through companies linked to the original installers.
The Minister acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and confirmed that Government is taking action. Existing schemes have already been halted, and ministers are expected to introduce stronger consumer protections later this year.
Andrew added:
“The Minister listened carefully to the concerns raised and assured us that action is being taken. I will continue working with Mike Thomas, Trading Standards and ministers to ensure vulnerable householders are protected and those responsible are held to account.
“In the meantime, I urge everyone to be cautious. Never agree to work offered through cold-calling or doorstep sales, and please share this advice with elderly relatives, neighbours and friends who may be vulnerable to these tactics.”
