George steps up campaign for woodland protection

West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has this week launched a Parliamentary Motion calling on the Government to improve action to restore and protect ancient woodland.
In the motion, which has cross-party support of 36 MPs, Mr George highlights the vital role ancient woodlands have in supporting nature and contributing to national biodiversity and climate obligations.
Ancient woodlands, those which have existed since at least 1600, now cover just 2.5% of the UK. Their status has been undermined in some cases through the planting of non-native species on ancient sites.
Commenting on the motion, Andrew George said: “Government ministers have often failed to see the wood for the trees where our ancient woodlands are concerned. It’s time to review our approach to nature restoration. Our ancient woodlands seem to have suffered from being “out of sight, out of mind”. It’s time to recognise their richness and value and to improve the way we back them.”
