Recall Parliament – Gaza

The deliberate obstruction of aid, the targeting of civilians, and the broader context of occupation and systemic injustice are intolerable. As you may know I’ve already been very outspoken against the actions of the far-right Netanyahu government. Here is a link to my statements, actions and inputs following my visit a few months ago to the West Bank. Those responsible for the starvation and death in Gaza must be condemned and held to account.

While it is regrettably unlikely that the Government will recall Parliament during the summer recess (though I support the call), I have and will continue to support the campaign to demand urgent and meaningful action. Statements alone are no longer sufficient. The UK must take concrete steps to uphold international law and stand against the collective punishment of civilians.

It is clear that the far-right Netanyahu government is using Israeli hostages as a pretext to continue the slaughter. He also knows that if he stops, he may face elections, and if removed from office, may ultimately face the courts and prison. This is not leadership; it is the cynical exploitation of power for political survival.

It is clearer that greater pressure from the international community is needed for Netanyahu to finally bring an end to his murderous campaign. The UK government should enact:

  • A full two-way arms embargo and an end to all military cooperation with Israel.
  • A ban on trade that facilitates or profits from violations of international law.
  • Targeted sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, against those responsible for orchestrating these atrocities.

I will continue to press for justice and accountability, and to stand in solidarity with those campaigning for peace, human rights, and the dignity of all people in the region. Parliament may not be sitting, but our voices should not be silent.
