Tax System Reform
I am concerned about the strain on our NHS, schools, councils, and essential services, all of which have been stretched to breaking point.
The previous Conservative government were content to preside over the running down of our public services. Years of economic mismanagement, underinvestment, and misguided austerity policies have pushed our public services into crisis. The NHS is in its worst crisis in its history, with hospital waiting times at record levels and patient care suffering.
Schools across the country face serious funding shortages and staff cutbacks, while our local councils, like those in Cornwall and other rural areas, have been left on the brink of collapse, struggling to meet basic community needs.
Additionally, Cornwall’s Conservative-led Council has cut vital services and failed to invest in social care, which has left the elderly and vulnerable with inadequate support.
My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I are committed to overhauling our tax system, so that those who can afford to pay more do so, to rebuild vital public services and progressive taxation, including with a focus on making capital gains tax equitable by closing loopholes that permit the wealthiest to avoid paying their fair share.
Tax reform is a credible solution to fund our public services. We have seen time and again our previous Conservative Government choose not to tackle the issues of inequality and tax avoidance, instead allowing the wealthiest individuals and companies to continue benefiting from an outdated and flawed system.

I will continue to campaign for a more prosperous tax system and work with parliamentarians to secure changes needed to deliver a fairer society.
