Global Deal on Tax Reform

We should combat widening inequality, and our tax system should contribute towards this objective. This shouldn’t be motivated by the politics of envy, but the politics of social justice. I support the campaign for tax justice in this country.

Tackling tax avoidance and ensuring that the wealthiest individuals and corporations pay their fair share is essential for building a fairer economy both in the UK and internationally.

My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I have consistently pressed for a fair international tax system. We welcomed the work under the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework, which brought together over 140 countries to tackle corporate tax avoidance, improve coherence in international tax rules, and ensure a more transparent system. While this is an historic step, the current global minimum corporate tax rate of 15% remains too low. We have called for an increase to 21%, alongside greater attention to the concerns of developing countries, to ensure that all nations benefit from a fairer system.

I will continue to press the government to support international cooperation on tax reform, to strengthen the existing framework, and to signal the UK’s commitment to tackling inequality both at home and globally.
