DWP Changes – The Future of PIP

Disabled people already face an inadequate system. The transition from Disability Living Allowance to PIP introduced barriers, causing unnecessary stress and delays. Mandatory Reconsideration often rubber-stamps initial decisions rather than providing meaningful reassessments. Meanwhile, outsourced Work Capability Assessments prioritise quantity over fairness, leading to unjust decisions.

I share the concerns of my colleague, Steve Darling MP, regarding the refusal to rule out replacing PIP with a voucher system. This would undermine disabled individuals’ autonomy and limit their ability to cover essential needs. PIP is a necessity, not a luxury. The Liberal Democrats firmly oppose this proposal and urge the Government to reject it outright (EDM 62796: https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/62796).

My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I advocate urgent reforms, including bringing Work Capability Assessments back in-house, increasing PIP assessment transparency, and ending unnecessary reassessments. The Government must engage meaningfully with disabled individuals and advocacy groups to ensure changes promote dignity and fairness.
