Promoting the Politics of Courage

Rough Sleeping Initiative (RSI)

My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I understand the urgency of securing ongoing support for those who are at risk of homelessness or currently sleeping rough.

I have regularly lobbied for increased funding for services such as St Mungo’s and continue to work alongside local authorities and charities to ensure our community receives the support it needs. I worked for many years as a professional in the charity housing sector and was proud to serve for many years as a volunteer with the Penzance Street Food Project.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to addressing homelessness and recognise that, while RSI funding has been a lifeline for many, it must be part of a wider strategy that includes building more affordable housing, providing long-term support for mental health, and tackling the root causes of homelessness, such as the cost of living crisis and the lack of affordable housing.

We have also been pushing for stronger support for frontline services, as we know they play a crucial role in providing immediate relief and long-term solutions. In Parliament, we’ve called for the continuation of RSI funding and for it to be uplifted to meet growing demand. We understand that without this funding, services will be forced to close, leaving vulnerable people without the vital support they need.

I was pleased to see the extension of the RSI beyond March 2025 and the enhancement of funding to combat homelessness and rough sleeping announced in the Autumn Budget. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, a total funding package of nearly £1 billion has been allocated for these services, marking a significant investment aimed at addressing the homelessness crisis.

This funding includes the Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grant, which is part of the broader strategy to tackle homelessness. The grant simplifies local authorities’ access to and management of rough sleeping grants, ensuring that resources are effectively utilized to support those in need.

Challenges do nonetheless persist. Without continued support, rough sleeping levels could return to record highs. Thus, while RSI funding continues and has been increased, ongoing efforts and additional support are crucial to effectively address and reduce homelessness in our communities. I will continue to use my voice in Parliament to advocate for this cause.
