Independent Pornography Review
This review rightly highlights significant concerns regarding the accessibility and content of online pornography, particularly its potential to harm individuals and society.
My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I share concerns regarding the growing prevalence of violent pornographic material, as well as regulatory disparities between offline and online pornographic content. We are also supportive of Baroness Bertin’s recommendation about addressing technological advancement in pornography, particularly AI-generated content.
The recommendations in the review provide a clear and practical framework to address the industry’s harmful practices. From ensuring that harmful content is treated as illegal online to banning non-fatal strangulation pornography and ‘nudification’ apps, these measures are essential steps toward protecting vulnerable individuals and holding the industry accountable. The links between pornography and human trafficking, as well as the mental and physical health impacts, must also be urgently addressed.
My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I will continue to scrutinise any upcoming legislative proposals to tackle aspects of online pornography that need greater regulation, whilst not infringing upon people’s freedoms and privacy. The government’s pledge to halve violence against women and children within a decade must be matched by decisive action, and I will do all I can to ensure this issue remains a priority.
