Ruling on Definition of ‘Woman’
I recognise why many will have deep unease regarding the implications of this decision, particularly for transgender and non-binary people who need reassurance and clarity regarding the inevitable uncertainty and fear about their rights and safety.
My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I are steadfast in our commitment to defending the rights of all LGBTQ+ people and rejecting discrimination in all its forms. We are urging the government to provide clarity—through new legislation if necessary—to ensure that everyone’s rights are unequivocally protected. This must include measures to guarantee the safety and dignity of the trans community.
My colleague Christine Jardine, our Women and Equalities spokesperson, has already written to the minister to request a meeting to address these pressing concerns. It is vital that the government acts swiftly to clarify any residual confusion surrounding the ruling’s interaction with the Gender Recognition Act, which has been a cornerstone of transgender rights for over two decades.
At the Liberal Democrat’s Spring Conference in March, we published our paper on LGBTQ+ rights ‘Free to Be Who You Are’. A link to this paper can be found here: https://www.libdems.org.uk/fileadmin/user_upload/Free_To_Be_Who_You_Are_-_Final_Version_2.pdf
Though the Supreme Court has ruled, there remains concern about circumstances which might present the transgender community with difficulty and which must be addressed. Above all, this must not be used as an excuse for a backward step. We must fight bigotry and discrimination.
The Supreme Court ruling must not be weaponised to fuel divisive culture wars or erode anyone’s rights. We will continue to advocate for a society where everyone can live free from fear and discrimination.
