BBC Reform Coverage

A functioning democracy depends on the existence of high quality, well resourced, and scrupulously impartial public service broadcasting. The BBC is central to that.

Recent developments give cause for concern. The tendency of ‘news’ broadcasters to chase and headline outrageous comment and controversy has contributed most to the rise of the far-right – both here and in other countries. This of course includes the disproportionate coverage afforded to Reform UK, a party with just five seats in the House of Commons This raises legitimate questions about editorial balance. The apparent revelation that BBC management held a specific, minuted discussion on how to reach out to Reform only deepens these concerns.

Impartiality must mean fair treatment for all political parties, not just those who shout the loudest or seek attention by stoking division. The BBC’s editorial independence is vital, but it must be exercised with responsibility and fairness. Public trust in our broadcasters depends on their ability to provide balanced and reliable political coverage. The Liberal Democrats are amongst the few who are prepared to challenge the rise of the far-right and willing to stand up to Reform and their divisive politics.
