School Funding

Education is a most important investment not only in our children’s future, but that out our country and our planet. Yet that has not always been reflected in government policy. Despite repeated claims from the Conservatives that education was a priority, they seemed more concerned with political dogma than in children. Too many schools are left struggling with crumbling buildings, overstretched staff and budgets which simply do not match the level of need. 

My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I have called for sustained, above-inflation increases in per-pupil funding, so that schools and colleges can plan with confidence and deliver the high-quality education every child deserves. 

We also advocate for strengthened early years support, including an increased Early Years Pupil Premium, and the introduction of a dedicated “young people’s premium” for 16–18-year-olds. It is vital to maintain and expand access to Free School Meals, ensuring that no child’s education is undermined by poverty. 

Mental health support is another critical concern. Too many young people are unable to access timely help. We continue to call for a dedicated mental health professional in every school, so that pupils and families have somewhere to turn when they need support. 

Workload pressures are driving too many talented teachers out of the profession, while pay has failed to keep pace with inflation for many years. Any pay awards should be properly funded, rather than leaving schools to make impossible choices elsewhere in their budgets. Protections around working hours should also be respected, and a coherent national approach to pay and conditions is essential if we are to recruit and retain the staff our schools depend on. 

I also recognise concerns regarding accountability within academy trusts and the effective use of public funds. Transparency and robust oversight are vital to maintaining confidence in the system. Equally, the regulation of supply agencies must ensure fair pay for staff and value for schools. 

We are also pressing for urgent investment to address the scandal of deteriorating school buildings and the backlog of essential repairs, which in some cases are putting both pupils and staff at risk. 

I have and will continue to press ministers, including the need for a long-term, sustainable funding settlement and a comprehensive plan to support the education workforce and improve outcomes for all children.
