Tibet – Human Rights Crisis
My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I are deeply concerned about the reported and ongoing intimidation and persecution of Tibetans’ rights to freedom, including freedom of religious expression/ adherence, etc.
We will continue to strongly defend and promote human rights, both in the UK and across the globe, including to defend and protect those who risk being persecuted, whether for their religion or belief, sexuality, etc.
The UK should not sit idly by while the Chinese government continues to persecute and intimidate. There is no justifiable excuse for failing to act. Liberal Democrats will keep pressing the government to uphold human rights.
The Conservative Government didn’t take the threat posed by China seriously. In the 2023 Integrated Review refresh, the Conservatives failed to recognise that what was happening to the Uyghur people in Xinjiang was tantamount to a genocide. They were weak in respect of China’s intimidation of its neighbours, from its aggression towards Taiwan to its dismantling of democracy in Hong Kong.
We are pressing our government to urgently implement and use Magnitsky-style sanctions on state and non-state individuals who are reasonably suspected of being involved in human rights violations in Tibet and Xinjiang.
