Solar Radiation Management

My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I support the use of evidence-based scientific efforts to tackle climate change and research which may help identify potential solutions, providing that any potential risks or adverse consequences are pre-evaluated, monitored and of course minimised. This must be transparent, properly scrutinised, and subject to public consultation. We are therefore concerned as none of this has occurred. The Government’s decision to press ahead with these trials in this manner is concerning.

From what I gather, the trials involve dispersing human-made emissions into the atmosphere, something that already occurs daily through transport and industry. The Government claims these emissions will not cause environmental harm, health risks, or damage to agriculture. However, without full disclosure and independent assessment, such assurances cannot be independently verified or confirmed.

The public must be consulted, and the Government must provide clear information about the plans, methodology, purpose, and its own risk assessments. I have written to Secretary of State Ed Miliband and relevant Ministers to request clarity and insist on proper engagement with the public.
