The government should invest in the future – renewable energy – not cling to the past. Decisions made in the next decade will either set us on a course to protect our planet or push us further into a climate catastrophe. We need urgent, sensible action to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean, affordable, and secure energy. This is especially important now that the new Trump administration has decided to turn the clock back.
That means phasing down oil and gas responsibly, ensuring that workers and communities are supported in the transition, and providing the right incentives for investment in green technologies. While each new oil and gas licence must be assessed on its own merits, it’s undeniable that continuing down this path presents serious risks to our climate commitments.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives have failed at every turn. They resisted lifting their ban on onshore wind, made solar development harder, and neglected the potential of renewables—the cheapest, cleanest, and most secure way to power our homes and businesses. Instead of backing the industries of the future, they are doubling down on the polluting industries of the past.
My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I are pressing for a fair and managed transition—one that protects jobs and communities while ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. We must bring down bills, strengthen our energy security, and tackle the climate emergency head-on.
Our Parliamentary Spokesperson for Energy Security and Net Zero recently raised these concerns in Parliament—you can read more here.
