Fashion Watchdog
The fashion industry must change. My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I recognise the need for reform. The prevalence of unfair trading practices—misleading sustainability claims, exploitative labour conditions, and the prioritisation of profit over ethics—cannot continue unchecked. Too often, fast fashion giants shift production to poorly regulated factories, leaving workers vulnerable and consumers misled.
The environmental impact of the industry is deeply concerning. Synthetic fibre pollution, avoidably high carbon emissions, and the relentless cycle of overproduction cause ecological harm. We must act to cut pollution, reduce waste, and demand ethical responsibility in supply chains. Without firm regulation and corporate accountability, both people and the planet will continue to suffer.
I support the proposal to create a Fashion Watchdog along the lines of the Groceries Code Adjudicator. It could lead the charge for a fairer, more sustainable fashion industry.
