Promoting the Politics of Courage

Wildlife & Fur (Humane World For Animals & Fur Free Britian)

The Liberal Democrats would introduce a Nature Act to restore the environment with legally binding targets and invest £18 billion over five years.

We would also invest in the large-scale restoration of natural habitats to absorb carbon, protect against floods, preserve biodiversity, and uphold international treaties for stronger action to protect wild animals from exploitation, hunting, or entertainment. With one in seven UK species at risk of extinction, urgent action is needed.

We are strongly committed to ensuring that all animal wildlife crimes are dealt with in a way that reflects the distressing nature of these crimes. I am also deeply disappointed by the previous Conservative government’s decision to abandon the planned bans on fur and foie gras imports—both of which have no place in a country that values animal welfare.

In 2021, many Liberal Democrat colleagues, including our Environment spokesperson Tim Farron MP, urged the government to ban fur imports. Despite widespread public and cross-party support, the government failed to act, allowing the UK to continue outsourcing animal cruelty.

The Liberal Democrats remain committed to strengthening animal welfare laws and ensuring they reflect the values of the British people. We will keep fighting for our environment and animal welfare.
