Hare Hunting Close Season

My Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues and I believe that reforms are essential to ensure habitats and species, including hares, are properly protected.

Hares are a rarity in this part of the world and an essential part of UK biodiversity; and they play a vital role in maintaining the health of grasslands and meadows. Hares are sentient beings capable of experiencing suffering, pain, and fear. Their protection is not only morally imperative but an essential part of our commitment to uphold high standards of animal welfare.

Recently, the Liberal Democrat party leader, Sir Ed Davey, raised the issue of illegal hare coursing at Prime Minister’s Questions, calling for a comprehensive rural crime strategy to address hare coursing and safeguard rural communities and wildlife. His question to the Prime Minster can be found following this link.

I am also aware of the Private Member’s Bill introduced in the House of Lords by Baroness Helic. If this bill were to be passed to the House of Commons, I would certainly be minded to support it.
