Concerns About The Far-right
I am concerned about the failures of judgement which have shaken public confidence. Democratic government depends on integrity, and when those in power fall short, it is right that they are held to account.
However, I agree that accountability should be matched with responsibility. As you rightly warn, allowing instability to spiral creates opportunities for the far‑right to exploit discontent for their own ends. I have always stood up to that kind of bully‑boy politics, and I will continue to challenge it wherever it surfaces. While the government should always be challenged, we should also ensure our actions do not deepen the disorder from which the far‑right hopes to profit.
The Labour Government should shoulder its share of responsibility. Too often they have wavered when clarity was needed or allowed fear of upsetting focus groups to trump moral leadership, often ending up parroting the far-right, instead of standing up for the traditional values of decency for which the UK is proud. When Labour trims its sails to the political winds rather than confronting prejudice and inequality head‑on, it leaves a vacuum in which the far‑right narrative can grow.
My party values decency, compassion, internationalism, and evidence‑based policy making. That said, I have also earned a reputation for independent mindedness when I feel that even my party doesn’t fully achieve these values and objectives, and when putting the interests of Cornwall and the principles of justice above any party whip. I will challenge this and any other government if they repeat the same mistakes.
