Welcome boost for local NHS
Local MP, Andrew George, has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust will receive an additional £1.2 million for the reconfiguration of the emergency department at Treliske.
This extra investment is part of over £330 million in extra funding for the NHS in England, which will be spent on providing state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to improve services for patients.
The money will be used to create a single point of access for patients at Treliske.
The Coalition Government has made savings on IT systems and this money is now being reinvested to directly benefit patients.
Mr George said: “This is great news and I hope will help to reinforce the essential service both at Treliske and the important development to emergency back up at West Cornwall Hospital. Clearly, the Coalition Government’s drive to deliver better spending centrally is benefitting patients in Cornwall
“Patients deserve access to the best quality equipment and services.
“Reinvesting the money saved on back office support is the right thing to do for our patients. This investment will safeguard and improve services with more world-class equipment in NHS hospitals.
“Ministers should be congratulated for this. But will have to take care that these gains are not undermined by the disruptive and wasteful consequences of their NHS Bill.
“This is the first evidence of the benefit of the efficiency gain which the previous Labour Government called for but didn’t deliver.”
