Strong support for Shelterbox – George
The MP who officiated at the original launch of ShelterBox 13 years ago, Andrew George, will receive a further update on progress when he again visits their Helston Headquarters tomorrow morning, Tuesday 5th November at 9.30 am.
Mr George has been a consistently strong supporter of ShelterBox – including with personal donations and supporting fundraising events – since the charity was first created by its founder, Tom Henderson, and the Helston Rotary Club.
Mr George will meet the Chief Executive Officer, Alison Wallace, who was appointed to her post in April this year.
Mr George said, “ShelterBox is an outstanding charity. It was an enormous privilege for me to be asked to support the launch of the charity in Helston 13 years ago. I have been pleased to maintain close liaison with it ever since. I have consistently sought to highlight the significance of the charity to a succession of Government International Development Secretaries and to seek the support and cooperation of Government departments.
“I was particularly pleased that we secured Government Rapid Response Facility (RRF) status for the charity last year. This is appropriate recognition for a charity of this significance.
“Like many of the charity’s thousands of supporters and well-wishers, I naturally hope that the difficulties ShelterBox has faced in respect of the departure of the former Chief Executive, Tom Henderson, will not deflect it from the essential work the charity has performed and will continue to perform in the years to come.
“Whilst I am supporting the efforts of Tom Henderson to use his talents to create a new disaster relief venture – Shelter for Humanity – I hope that this can work in harmony with the charity he founded and drove to great success – ShelterBox.
“I look forward to, once again, visiting the charity as it is about a year since the last occasion I had the opportunity to meet staff and volunteers at the Helston HQ.”
