West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has congratulated local constituents for signing up in their droves as his petition to save main line services from Penzance to London leaves the station.

Before even taking his petition around the streets of the local constituency, over 4000 people have already signed up online and many have taken away forms to sign up family, neighbours and friends.

Mr George is urging people to complete the petition before mid-October when he will present it both to Parliament and to Transport Ministers.

The petition says:

SAVE PENZANCE TO LONDON INTERCITY TRAIN SERVICES

To the House of Commons. The Petition of residents of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and others,

Declares that the Petitioners are concerned about the provision of train services between Penzance and London from July 2013 onwards.

The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to retain at least 9 daily direct intercity services between Penzance and London in the new (2013-2028) Great Western rail franchise.

Mr George said: “Whilst we have won some concessions in our campaign to protect at least 9 intercity through trains between Penzance and London each day, there is still much to do. Ministers have merely confirmed that they will at least protect 6 through trains a day. If that is all we are left with for the next 15 years that is simply not good enough. When the rest of the country are looking forward to £multi billion investment in electrification, faster and more efficient trains, it seems that Government Ministers are prepared to turn Cornwall into a branch line. That’s why we need a strong petition from local residents to make sure that our voice is heard.”
