Putting Cornwall’s Solar Energy at centre of National roll-out
The Cornish MP who leads on energy and climate change for the Liberal Democrats, Andrew George, welcomed the Government’s announcement to stabilise the renewable energy from solar power industry. The Minister also revealed that he saw Cornwall as the focus for this emerging industry with the creation of the National Solar Centre.
In the Commons this afternoon Energy and Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker MP, announced reforms to the solar PV industry which would put it on a more predictable and sustainable footing for householders, businesses, communities and the UK solar industry. He also welcomed the Cornwall Council and the Building Research Establishment initiative to create a solar research and development centre which will put the Duchy at the cutting edge of the UKs solar energy industry.
Mr George, the Liberal Democrat MP for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Constituency of St Ives, acknowledged that new details of the Feed-in-Tariffs system have been drawn up following consultation with both the industry and consumers and are intended to provide stability and confidence for the next stage of the industry’s development.
Commenting Mr George said:
“Today’s announcement is good news for the solar industry and good news for Cornwall. The Feed-in-Tariff details will give the industry the certainty and stability going forward after a difficult time for the sector. Government championing solar energy is vital to the future of many emerging businesses. Showing that the Government is working in partnership with the sector in this way helps those working towards sustainable growth now.
“I also welcome the news that Cornwall will be able to add to its ‘Green Peninsula’ credentials by housing the proposed National Solar Centre. I will support Cornwall Council’s efforts and those of the Building Research Establishment to set up the Centre.”
