“Ministers must put need before greed in homes plan” – George
Local MP, Andrew George, has again urged Ministers to “put need before greed” in their housing plans. He challenged Ministers in Parliament this week, pointing out that Cornwall is “not a NIMBY place”, as the housing stock had grown “faster than most other places over the last 60 years. Yet the housing needs of locals have got worse!”.
Andrew said, “The planning system is fuelled by greed, not need. Ministers must shift policy to deliver homes locals need, not to reward land value speculators, as the planning system presently does.
“I also held a productive meeting with Secretary of State, Steve Reed MP, last week, alongside Cornish MP colleague Noah Law and Community Land Trust representatives to encourage the Government to rekindle the hundreds of shovel-ready, genuinely affordable community-led homes for locals in Cornwall and on Scilly, but which are currently stuck. I’m working to follow this through. The needs are desperate. We need the Government to act now.”
Ministers also met MPs, Cornwall Council and social housing representatives last week to present ambitions for a programme of social housing delivery.
