MP accuses Government of sidestepping elected House to abolish protections for farm workers

Posted on: 17th April 2013

West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has objected to the Government side stepping the House of Commons in its abolition of the Agricultural Wages Board. Mr George complained to the Speaker during yesterday’s Commons proceedings.

The Government had introduced amendments to the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill in the House of Lords but did not provide an opportunity for MPs to either debate or to vote on the matters as they went through the House yesterday.

Mr George, who had intended to question the Government on its plans to remove essential protections for farm workers, believes that such measures should be the subject of full Parliamentary scrutiny and the opportunity of a vote.
