“Marine Conservation Zones = Blue Planet Award for Cornwall & Scilly” – George

Posted on: 21st November 2013

Commenting on news that that the Isles of Scilly and the Manacles, as well as three local offshore areas, have been given Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) status, MP for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Andrew George said:

“Five of the 27 new Marine Conservation Zones are off the coast of, or within fishing grounds of, the St Ives constituency.

“This is welcome news. It shows that fishing and other industries have not destroyed the marine habitats around our coast, as some have suggested.

“I am sure that it is possible to achieve a workable balance between a continuation of the kind of low impact fishing which sustains many of our coastal communities, and marine conservation.

“I will seek the reassurance of Ministers and the Marine Management Organisation that fishermen will be fully involved and consulted on the future management plans.”
