Mackerel hasn’t had its fish & chips – George

Commenting on news that the Marine Conservation Society has declared mackerel as “unsustainable”, local MP, Andrew George, said that Cornish mackerel handliners should therefore be given more support.

Mr George said, “Cornish Mackerel Handliners currently have an annual quota of around 1750 tonnes while Scottish trawlers have 200k tonnes.  Cornish mackerel handliners use a method which is much more sustainable and should be encouraged.

“Of course I regret that the Scots are in dispute with Iceland and the Faroes, but both the Marine Conservation Society and our Government should be pulling out all the stops to both protect and encourage our local handliners.”
