Keep Sunday Special

Posted on: 20th August 2012

Local MP Andrew George is calling on the Government not to extend Sunday trading hours.

Following the extension to usual Sunday trading hours that has been granted to some larger supermarket stores for the Olympic and Paralympic Games reports state that some Conservative Government Ministers are considering making the arrangement permanent. Senior Conservative Ministers are reported to believe that permanently extended Sunday opening hours would help contribute to the economic recovery in England and Wales.

However the controversial proposal has already been criticised by unions, religious leaders, and even the Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, Justin King.

Mr George said:

“I have always strongly advocated the case for keeping Sunday special. We need one day which not like the others; which gives families a chance to relax, contemplate, recreate, and worship.

“Extending Sunday opening hours will not lift us out of recession.”
