Home thoughts from abroad – George speaks to Cornish exiles in London

Posted on: 15th March 2013

The MP for the West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George, will be the principal speaker at the annual dinner of the London Cornish Association at the Thistle Hotel, Marble Arch on the evening of Saturday 16th March.

Mr George was the first MP to speak Cornish in his Maiden Speech to the House of Commons in May 1997. He is proud of his Cornish heritage and has successfully campaigned for the Cornish language, Cornish European Regional status, a Cornish University College and, generally greater Government respect for the integrity of Cornwall in all that the Government does.

The President of the Association is Sir David Brewer, Lord Lieutenant of Greater London and a former Lord Mayor.

Mr George said, “It is reassuring for a Cornish MP to know that there are fellow Cornish exiles living in the London area to offer down to earth Cornish commonsense and sanity, especially when the going gets tough!

“I hope I can reassure my fellow Exiles that this Cornish Member of Parliament continues not only to fight for proper Cornish recognition, and such concerns as the campaign to respect the integrity of the Cornish border but also to fear the consequences of meddling with the status of the humble Cornish pasty!”
