Former Principal of Helston Community College – Dr Pat McGovern, and local MP Andrew George, took time to reflect on their successful campaign to secure funding for a College rebuild.  Mr George gave the credit to Dr McGovern for the phenomenal effort and energetic campaign he put into advancing the case for the £multi-million rebuild of the College – announced by the Deputy Prime Minister on 9th February 2015.  Dr McGovern also thanked Mr George.

Dr Pat McGovern said, “I am enormously grateful to our Member of Parliament and former student of the College, Andrew George, for all his support and tireless efforts on behalf of the College and the Helston Community. Andrew continued to campaign, support, arrange meetings with the Minister and encourage the Governors and myself not to give up hope when things looked bleak.

“Without his support we would never have secured the funds to replace tired, worn out and unsuitable buildings. I’m sure he will continue his work to see the plans become a reality”.

Mr George said: “Pat did a phenomenal job. After so many false starts and dashed hopes, the easiest thing of all would have been to throw in the towel and admit defeat. But Pat wasn’t prepared to do that.  Enormous credit is also due to the staff and pupils at Helston College who had to endure the hot, cold, damp and a potentially dangerous environment at the College.  Governors also deserve a special mention.

“It was a privilege to I play my part, making representations, including two delegations to Government Ministers, questions in the House, campaigning, and working with Cornwall Council. But, at the end of the day, credit must go to Pat McGovern, his Governors, staff and pupils.

“Now comes the hard task of designing, scoping and building much of the upper site. I look forward to seeing how this develops over the next few years.”
