Health Select Committee Report on A&E: “Lack of urgency in response to A&E crisis’

Health Select Committee Member and MP for the West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George, has commented on his Select Committee’s report published today on the current crisis in A&E Departments. A copy of the Committee’s press release and report are attached.

Mr George said: “On the one hand hospitals are struggling because cuts have resulted in bed pressures as they struggle to admit patients to the wards. On the other are inadequate measures to handle minor cases in the community which end up coming, often unnecessarily, to the emergency departments.

“Above all we found that there was no one taking responsibility for the co-ordination of emergency care across the country. Although unplanned by its nature and unpredictable, A&E services still need to be co-ordinated with better integration between primary care, ambulance services, NHS 111 and the emergency departments themselves.”
