George welcomes return of safe drinking water

Posted on: 31st July 2013

St Ives MP Andrew George has welcomed news that West Cornwall’s water is once again safe to drink after concerns earlier this week. On Sunday around 1500 homes in St Ives, Carbis Bay and Lelant were warned to boil water before drinking or preparing food with it, after harmful bacteria were found in a local reservoir. South West Water has announced this afternoon that there are no further concerns about the safety of tap water.

Local businesses had raised concerns about the effect on tourism, with the scare coinciding with families flocking to St Ives at the start of the school holidays.

Mr George said:  “I welcome this news. Local people and visitors have had much to endure in recent days. I hope that South West Water will learn lessons from this recent incident and share the findings of their investigation when it’s complete.”
