George welcomes Newtown Roundabout Investment
Andrew George, MP for West Cornwall, St. Ives and Isles of Scilly, has welcomed news that the Government is to invest in a scheme to widen the A30 for westbound traffic at Newtown Roundabout, Penzance.
In a letter Mr George received today the Minister for Transport, Mike Penning MP, announced that as part of the Department for Transport’s Pinch Point Programme the Government would be providing the investment to support ‘local economic growth…by improving access to sites which have the potential to create employment and housing in the Penzance area.’
The Pinch Point Programme was announced in the Autumn Statement (29th November, 2011) enabling the Highways Agency to invest in improving crucial parts of the road network to help local economic growth, relieve congestion, and improve safety.
Mr George has continually pressed for improvements on this road between Rose-An-Grouse and Newtown junctions. He regularly cycles between his home in Hayle and his office in Penzance and is also aware of many of the cycle and pedestrian safety issues on the route.
Commenting Mr George said;
“This is welcome news. I hope the improvements will help to alleviate some of the summer pressure and will be designed with cycle and pedestrian safety in mind. But we mustn’t rest on our laurels there. A lot more needs to be done to get the investment necessary to relieve congestion and protect property on this A30 stretch.”
