George welcomes new figures showing stronger economy

Posted on: 25th October 2013

Commenting on today’s GDP figures showing that the economy grew by 0.8% in the last quarter, West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has pointed to the Government’s fiscal stimulus to support local authorities and businesses in his constituency.

Mr George said: “The Liberal Democrats came into Government to build a strong economy and a fair society, enabling everyone to get on in life. Getting growth going and creating jobs is at the heart of that. We have helped businesses create a million jobs, now we want to help create a million more.”

“Fixing the economy was always going to take time, but these figures are further evidence that the basis of the Coalition’s plan is working.

“This recovery would not be happening without Liberal Democrats in Government.”

The Liberal Democrats in Government have given a grant to Avanti Communications Group Plc for the Avanti Goonhilly Development Programme. This will help create more jobs.

They have also given Helston business, Spiral Construction, a £312,000 grant to create 110 training places, including 20 apprenticeships. Spiral Construction is using the money to work with a collaboration of at least 12 small businesses to deliver training for small manufacturers in Cornwall.
And they’ve also allocated £119,000 to fund the A30 Newtown Roundabout at Penzance and £52,740 for 15 new homes on Scilly and will now put £millions more into infrastructure improvements to both St Mary’s and Penzance harbours.

A million more people are currently in work compared to early 2010, according to the Office of National Statistics, and across the UK the number of unemployed people in the UK has dropped by 18,000 in the last three months.

The growth figures follow the announcement that new energy, road and rail projects worth £33 billion have passed the first hurdle in securing Government backing, as announced by Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander earlier in the week.
