George welcomes Broadband progress

Local MP, Andrew George, has welcomed another major milestone having been reached as Superfast Cornwall announced this week that over a third of all Cornish homes and businesses now have access to the high speed technology on the BT fibre network.

Superfast Broadband has just started to become available in 52 Cornish exchanges including Helston, St Ives, St Just, Mawgan, Mullion, Germoe, Rosudgeon, Ashton, St Erth, Lelant and Canonstown in Mr George’s constituency.

Mr George said: “More than 95,000 Cornish premises can now get the service. More than 6,000 people have already signed up to it. This is reassuring and I congratulate Superfast Cornwall on the progress so far.”

Superfast Cornwall expects to make fibre optic Broadband available to at least 80% of premises in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014.

Around £53 million of the funding for Superfast Cornwall is coming from the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme, whilst BT is investing up to £78.5 million.
