George meets Minister re. ‘closure’ of factory

Local MP, Andrew George, and representatives from the Penzance Remploy factory will meet Disabilities Minister, Maria Miller MP, in Westminster this evening.

This follows the announcement last week which confirmed that the Penzance factory has been identified for closure, in spite of a rescue attempt involving a Trust and local colleges.

Mr George has been working closely with the Remploy factory workers and has supported efforts to ensure that the factory can continue to be used for the benefit of disabled people seeking employment opportunities. He challenged the Minister in the Commons last week, at the time of the announcement, and requested the meeting which is taking place today.

Although representatives from the Brandon Trust – who put together the business plan for the future of the Penzance factory site – and Truro and Penwith Colleges will not be attending the meeting, the Minister was insistent that the meeting should take place as soon as possible. Mr George hopes that this will be the beginning of the dialogue to help disabled people find a stepping stone into the workplace.

Mr George said, “We are asking Government Ministers to hold the building and assets of the Penzance Remploy factory in Trust and make them available so that this new enterprise has the chance of succeeding.” Mr George will be joined by Factory Manager, Anthony Curnow and Assistant, Colin Grey.
